Körber's Multi Machine Interface (MMI) as an app for location-independent control of all machines in a production facility

News & Stories - 11/04/2024

A single app for all machines

Until recently, operators typically controlled machines using a Human Machine Interface (HMI). In the advance towards a smart factory, our Business Area has been offering a Multi Machine Interface (MMI) app, which has been successfully established on the market, to control all production machines remotely for a number of years now.

An operator in production is often responsible for optimum operation of multiple machines, a demanding task. In contrast to operating a machine via an HMI, our MMI makes it considerably easier to control and monitor multiple machines or lines at the same time, thus contributing significantly to production automation.

Scalable, user-friendly solution

“Our MMI is designed with a clear focus on ease of use. The intuitive operability and standardized software interface reduce the need for training, shorten the onboarding time for new operators and have a positive effect on the user experience,” explains Alvise Vianello, Business Development Manager. “The operator can use MMI as a standard application with all HMI functions to control production lines. MMI can be integrated with each local OEM HMI or completely replace them.” The app is suitable for all Körber machines and most third-party equipment.

Greater efficiency, fewer mistakes

Central control via the app on portable terminal devices saves considerable time and expense on operating the plant and increases efficiency throughout production. The standardized interface for all machines reduces the likelihood of operational errors since the operator does not need to switch between different systems with different user interfaces.

Vianello points out another advantage of the MMI for monitoring: “Compared to standard HMI applications, MMI offers additional smart functions which guide the operator and enhance efficiency and productivity. This is a significant advantage in identifying and resolving production issues, saving our customers valuable time and money. Overall, using an MMI for central control and monitoring of multiple systems significantly reduces operating costs by decreasing the need for operation and maintenance personnel.”

In essence, Vianello views the app as ‘an instrument for empowering operators throughout the production process’. He is convinced that companies in the tobacco industry and other sectors ‘can enhance operational efficiency, optimize production processes, and improve user experience by implementing the Körber MMI as a unified control system instead of using standard HMIs’.
